- The term "lightfastness" describes the light resistance of a color or a material.
- Lightfastness of parasols: The UV radiation contained in sunlight has a negative effect on many materials. As a result, colors can fade or change. With parasols and other products (e.g. clothing), this effect is of course not desirable.
Lightfastness as material protection: Lightfastness as a measurement value does not refer to the protection of people. It is solely about protecting the textiles themselves. Higher lightfastness offers protection against rapid fading and color changes. It also ensures that materials do not become brittle and fragile too quickly in the sun.
Quality and lightfastness: In general, every fabric eventually fades under direct and indirect exposure to light. However, the quality of the fabric influences how quickly the fading process becomes noticeable. The lightfastness of synthetic fibers, for example, is higher than that of natural fibers.
The wool scale
| The degree of lightfastness is defined using the wool scale (blue scale). The wool scale according to DIN 53952 corresponds to the sun exposure time in days, based on European weather conditions.
